Art

At St John of Jerusalem, we believe that art is a vital part of a child’s development. We have planned an art curriculum to engage children and inspire a love of creativity. Lessons have been planned to cover the skills required to meet the aims of the national curriculum. The intent is to ensure all pupils produce creative, imaginative work. Children have the opportunity to explore their ideas and record their experiences, as well as explore the work of others. Children will become confident and proficient in various techniques including drawing, painting, sculpting, and other selected craft skills such as collage, printing, weaving and patterns. Children will also develop their knowledge of famous artists, designers and craft makers. Lessons have been designed to ensure the progression of skills over the year groups.

Implementation

Each unit of learning has been planned, with additional resources supplied, to give the teacher leading the art session confidence in teaching the skills required. Each unit of work focuses on different themes which relate to the work of specific artists, or link to other topics that are being taught within the curriculum. The lessons that have been planned develop the children’s techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design. In every unit of work, the children have the opportunity to explore and develop their skills before completing a final piece of artwork.

Impact

All pupils will develop a love of learning art and design.  A wide range of quality evidence of skills and techniques can be presented in sketchbooks, and in other ways, which will enable children to look back on the work they have created and feel proud of what they have achieved. All children will be able to use technical vocabulary accurately and will be able to apply and understand the skills and processes that have been taught. Children will improve their enquiry skills and inquisitiveness about the world around them through their exploration of art, and study of a range of artwork by other artists. Children will become more confident in analysing their work and giving their opinion on their own and other works of art. Children will show competence in improving their resilience and perseverance by continually evaluating and improving their work. All children in school will be able to speak confidently about their art and design work, and their skills.
